Things to Do in West Puerto Rico
The west coast is where Puerto Rico faces the sunset, and the whole region is organized around that fact. Officially it is Porta del Sol; in practice it is a string of beach towns, Rincon, Aguadilla, Isabela, that run at about half San Juan's speed and end each day with everyone looking in the same direction.
The rhythm out here is seasonal in a way the rest of the island is not. From December through March, long-period North Atlantic swells wrap the corner and the west becomes the Caribbean's surf capital: boards on every car, lineups at Rincon's winter breaks, humpback whales moving through the Mona Passage off the lighthouse from mid January to mid March. Come summer the same water goes flat and clear, and beaches that were serious surf in February turn into swimming and snorkeling spots by June. Neither version is better. They are different trips, so decide which one you are booking before you book it.
What you will not find is resort infrastructure. Lodging skews toward guesthouses and rentals, dinner comes from beach bars and kiosks, and the best hour of the day is free: pick a west-facing stretch of sand and stay until the light is gone.

Getting There
Figure about 2.5 hours by car from San Juan without stops, and know that leaving the metro area at rush hour can add an hour to that. If the west is the whole trip rather than a side quest, check flights into Aguadilla's Rafael Hernandez Airport (BQN), which takes nonstops from New York, Newark, Orlando, and Fort Lauderdale and puts you on this coast without the drive.
