Rio Camuy Cave Park

The biggest cave system in the Caribbean is still behind a locked gate. Here is where the reopening actually stands.

Under the mogotes of Camuy, Hatillo and Lares runs the Rio Camuy, a river that spends much of its life underground, and around it the largest mapped cave system in the Caribbean: about 220 caves, 17 known entrances, more than 10 miles of surveyed passage. The Taino were down there centuries before Russell and Jeanne Gurnee’s 1958 expeditions put it on the map, and in 1987 Puerto Rico wrapped 268 acres of it into a national park. The showpiece is Cueva Clara, a cathedral-scale chamber you used to walk through on a paved ramp while the river roared somewhere below, with the Tres Pueblos sinkhole, named for the three municipal lines that meet inside it, gaping nearby.

Here is the honest part: the park has been closed more than open since 2017. Hurricane Maria shut it down, it came back in March 2021, Fiona closed it again in September 2022, it returned in early 2023, then the gates locked once more in late 2024. As of July 2026 they are still locked. This page exists so you do not learn that at km 18.9 on PR-129 with two kids in the back seat.

Going Like a Local

Nobody from Camuy drives to that gate on faith, and neither should you. The reopening story so far: in June 2025 the DRNA secretary announced a partial reopening for late 2025 or early 2026, leading with Cueva Clara, plus food and artisan concessions and a camping area, with glamping in a later phase. October 2025 brought talk of an imminent opening. A spring 2026 date came and went. By the end of May 2026 the mayor of Camuy was publicly counting the broken promises, and officials were pointing to later in the year. So the local protocol is simple: treat every announced date as provisional until someone you trust has stood inside Cueva Clara that week. Check DRNA’s channels and recent Puerto Rico news coverage the same week you travel, not the month before.

When it does reopen, expect a partial park, and expect it slammed. Boricuas have waited years for this one; the first weekends will belong to local families, and capacity limits will bite by mid-morning. Go on a weekday and aim for the first tour of the day. Until then, karst country still pays off: Cueva Ventana, off PR-10 south of Arecibo, runs guided tours on the hour every day.

Worth Knowing

File this under how it worked last time, so you can smell what is outdated elsewhere on the internet. When the park last operated it ran Wednesday through Sunday, tours on the hour, about two hours down and back, closed-toe shoes required, everything suspended when heavy rain moved in, because a cave over a live river takes weather seriously. The trolley era was already over; you walked the steep ramp into Cueva Clara and climbed back out. Assume all of it resets on reopening: hours, fees, reservation rules, capacity. Any dollar figure or schedule you find published before the new opening is history, not information. The gate sits on PR-129 at km 18.9 in barrio Quebrada, Camuy, on the winding stretch between Arecibo and Lares. We will update this page when DRNA publishes the new rules.
